Living Away From Tribal Lands

Do you currently live away from your tribe’s reservation or contemporary homeland? If so, we want to hear from you!

The Native Nations Institute is conducting a survey to learn how Indigenous communities are engaging and connecting with citizens and descendants who do not reside on tribal lands. This is to inform a new study that will provide guidance to Indigenous communities and their leaders on how to facilitate enduring relationships with their citizens and descendants.

Citizens and descendants often move away for opportunities like school and work but want to stay connected with their Indigenous communities. This survey builds upon a 2015 Native Nations Institute pilot study, which found that many Indigenous people who lived away from their tribal lands had a great desire to engage more with their communities. In recent years, several new virtual and digital platforms for connection have become mainstream, which will be explored in the new study to understand how individuals engage with their Indigenous communities.

This is a voluntary 20-minute online survey. Responses are anonymous unless participants choose to disclose their contact information at the end for a potential follow-up interview and/or to receive the study results. Participants can withdraw from the survey at any time.

This may include individuals who have:

  • never lived on your tribal lands
  • moved away to attend college
  • moved away for a job
  • moved away for health care
  • moved away for retirement
  • moved away for military
  • moved away for any other reason
  • and anyone else who has lived outside of tribal lands for 6 months or more

  • You are a citizen, enrolled member, or descendant of an Indigenous community,
which includes any of the following:
    • A U.S. federally recognized tribe
    • A U.S. state-recognized tribe
    • Any other Indigenous nation or community in the U.S.
  • You are 18 years of age or older.
  • You have lived outside of the present-day boundaries of your Indigenous community’s lands (e.g. reservation, village, pueblo, or rancheria) for six months or more in the past year. The length of time you have lived on your Indigenous community’s lands can vary (e.g. never lived there in your life, lived there for a summer, lived there in your childhood, etc.).
