Perspectives From Tribal Leaders: Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community President Martin Harvier

Tuesday

President Harvier presents during a "What I Wish I Knew Before I Took Office" panel discussion during Emerging Leaders 2023.

There is no playbook for elected leaders of Native nations, but you can learn a lot from those that have been there before.

In this 2023 Native Nations Institute (NNI) Emerging Leaders Seminar held at Talking Stick Resort and Casino on the lands of the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community, President Martin Harvier discusses his unconventional path to leadership and offers insights to help other Tribal leaders succeed in their elected roles.

The second part of the panel features Chairwoman of the Wampanoag Tribe of Gay Head (Aquinnah) Cheryl Andrews-Maltais. The edited video and link for that presentation are forthcoming, so stay tuned!

Panel is moderated by NNI Senior Researcher Miriam Jorgensen, PhD.

NNI's next Emerging Leaders Seminar will take place on July 16-15, 2025 in Tucson, AZ. Learn more and register here: https://nni.arizona.edu/emerging-leaders-seminar
