For several years, and often in collaboration with the Native Nations Institute (NNI), Ysleta del Sur Pueblo (YDSP) has been developing Tigua-appropriate strategies for addressing its governance challenges. As part of these efforts, NNI executive director Joan Timeche (Hopi), outreach specialist and senior researcher Danielle Hiraldo (Lumbee), and program coordinator for tribal services Lindsay Riggs (Diné) facilitated a Nation Building Educational Session at the Tigua Business Center in El Paso, TX on July 7-8, 2016. Twenty-three participants, including YDSP AmeriCorps staff, Tigua youth, and YDSP program managers and administrative staff, attended the session, which highlighted diverse, nation-building efforts throughout Indigenous Country. Joan, Danielle, and Lindsay also led small group discussions and decision-making exercises aimed at helping participants create strategic plans for strengthening YDSP jurisdiction and authority.
